The Mitford Estate

The Mitford Estate is well known in Northumberland as one of the county’s most prestigious and historic properties: its connection with the Mitfords, one of the region’s oldest families, is well documented and features in many of the historical reference books on the area.

The Estate’s location is unrivalled in the true sense of the word: Rothbury Forest provides a backdrop of hills to the north west as the rolling countryside falls away towards Morpeth and the North Sea beyond. Mitford Village was founded between two fords over the Rivers Font and Wansbeck respectively from where the family’s name is derived. The village still retains its rural charm and is largely unspoilt in its appearance.

The Estate itself centres on the Hall which is a masterpiece of design by the noted Northumbrian architect, John Dobson, previously referred to as ‘one of the most accomplished architects ever to have practised outside London’. In addition to this focal point the Estate includes a number of let agricultural holdings which provide a strategic setting to the Hall itself.

Combined with additional properties, extensive forestry and sporting interests, the Mitford Estate now provides an unrivalled residential and amenity property which enjoys excellent communications to Newcastle and beyond.
